A recent report by Cumbria Action for Sustainability suggests that green industries and investment could create 9,000 jobs in the region. Furthermore, these would not be time-limited in the same way that mining jobs, by their very nature, are. Now , isn't that better than a new coal mine?
What has been very concerning in this whole saga so far has been the "Yes, in my backyard" attitude of the local population. We hear a lot these days about changing attitudes towards climate change and greater recognition that action must be taken urgently. However, it would seem that jobs at any cost trump the future well-being of our children and grandchildren.
Cumbria has a net-zero by 2037 target which cannot be achieved on a business as usual basis so now is the time for concerted and targetted action.
