Edie recently posted a finding that there is a strong call for the UK's net-zero target to be pulled forward to 2030. This is all very well but I wonder how many people really understand what is required to achieve this. Let's just take the housing sector as an example. Our homes are collectively responsible for about a fifth of the UK's carbon emissions, much of this being associated with gas combustion for space heating and cooking. So what needs to be done?
> Retrofitting wall, floor and loft insulation to cut down on heat loss;
> Moving to heat pumps (probably mainly air source) for space heating - which in itself will require radiator replacement because bigger ones will be required to compensate for lower grade heat;
> Moving to induction hobs for cooking so many cooker will have to be stripped out and replaced;
> Installing modern high grade double glazing;
> Draught-proofing;
> Possibly - but not necessarily - self-generation.
This doesn't come cheaply!
