Walks from Wonersh 6: Downs Link - Gosden - Titlhams Corner - Unstead Wood - Downs Link

 

Start as Walk 1:

Turn left along the street past the timbered-framed cottages on your left. As you pass the last one turn back to note the curved timbers of a style found in a small area in SW Surrey and emanating from a short period between 1570 and 1585.

Continue past Church Green on your left and then St John the Baptist church. Follow the big left curve in the road and pass over Wonersh Bridge. Shortly you come to some restored level crossing gates where you turn right onto the Downs Link footpath below the station platform. Follow this footpath until it splits by an information board about the Wey and Arun Junction Canal where you take the right hand, smaller fork. Up ahead is a bridge. Go up to the right of the bridge, turn left opposite a small factory called TorqueLeader crossing over the bridge, followed almost immediately by a second bridge over the river.

As soon as you reach Gosden Common bear right, off the road, and around the edge of the Common passing Bramley Sports Pavilion. When you reach the main road cross straight over and take the small track running slightly to your right through the woods (avoid the one going left). Shortly you reach the drive to Bramley Golf Club. Cross straight over and carry on along the footpath. At the next road cross straight over again and walk down a slightly wider track passing Gosden Farmhouse on your left hand side.

After passing the sewage treatment works on the left, pass through the gate and walk straight ahead. At the junction with the road by the entrance to Unstead Manor turn left and then very shortly go right over 2 small bridges with metal railings on the side. Go over a third, brick, bridge and drop down right onto the tow path.

Walk along the tow path past Unstead Lock until you reach the next bridge going over the Navigation. Walk up left and then turn right over the bridge. Follow the track to the A281 and finish as per Walk 2:

Cross straight over the road to join the Downs Link. Follow the track all the way to the site of the Bramley and Wonersh Station where you turn left along the B2129. Follow this road as it winds its way back to Wonersh.

Walks from Wonersh 5: Downs Link - Birtley - Hurst Hill - Bramley

 

Starting, as usual, with your back to the Grantley Arms turn left along the B2129 towards Bramley. When you reach the Downs Link (the bed of the old Guildford to Horsham railway line) turn left. Follow the path until the houses on your right peter out. Immediately after you pass an industrial compound on your right (mercifully hidden behind a green screen) drop down right at the sign for the National Cycle Network Route 22 and then up a short slope to the A281. Turn left. Just after passing Birtley Court on your left and ¾ of the way around a left hand bend cross over to the track signposted Bonhurst Farm (this is between Birtley Tennis Club and Birtley House Nursing Home). Follow the track until you reach the top of the slope beyond Birtley Brook where you turn right towards Daneshill.

When you reach Daneshill turn right and follow a narrow path with woods to your right and an open field to your left. Keep straight ahead past Hurst Hill Farm until you eventually leave the fields behind and enter a wood. Very soon the path drops down steeply into a deep gulley. This can often be very muddy so I suggest you walk along the top of the right hand bank to join the path again as it exits the gulley (A lot of people have done this so there is a very clear path along the bank).

The path ends at Ricardo Court. Walk straight ahead and take the cut between houses (Woodrough Lane) to reach the A281. Bear left and cross over when you can. After passing several shops turn right into Windrush Close and then left onto the path by the Robertson Garden. This comes out into Hall Road by Bramley Village Hall.

Walk to the end of Hall Road and turn right along the B2128 which you follow back to Wonersh.

Walks from Wonersh 4: Barnett Hill - Blackheath - War Memorial - Great Tangley

 

With your back to the Grantley Arms turn right towards Cranleigh and then left after about 100 metres along Barnett Lane. Walk around a slight left hand bend and turn right up the footpath to the left of Woodyers Farm. Follow this path straight up the hill ignoring all turnings. At the top start to walk down the wide track behind Barnett Hill Hotel. Part way down take the narrow path running downhill to the right. Follow this to its end where it joins the track leading to Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery.

Take the path that skirts the left hand side of the cemetery and eventually you reach the back of Blackheath Farm (formerly Lynes Farm). Continue straight ahead up the slope. The path runs up a narrow gulley (it is possible to walk along the right hand bank if the gulley is very muddy). At the top of the gulley do not take the main path which bears slightly right; rather jig left and almost immediately right up hill again by a small blue painted marker post. Ignore two right hand junctions but as the path levels out and bends left take the third right hand turn, by another blue-topped post, to reach the top pf the slope and a break in the trees.

Follow the path across the open space to the trees on the other side, crossing over a track which runs along the open stretch in the process. Walk ahead along the path through the trees, again ignoring all junctions. Shortly you will reach a tarmacked road (Littleford Lane). Cross straight over to a path on the other side and follow this until you see Blackheath Cricket Ground to your left. Make your way to the cricket ground and walk diagonally across it (avoiding the square, of course) to a track running alongside the last of the houses that border the ground.

Follow this track to where it joins Blackheath Lane near the entrance to Blackheath car park. Carry on in the same direction along the road and you will see a footpath sign on your right. Soon afterwards take the path to your left which leads up the Blackheath War Memorial. Follow this up to the memorial and then take the path that runs down from there to your left. This joins a slightly larger path which enters a stand of trees before reaching another tarmacked road (Sampleoak Lane).

Cross straight over the road onto a wide track on the other side. When you reach a fork bear left to reach a house called Tangley Way. Take the footpath that runs past the right of this house. By the back corner of the property ignore the path that cuts off to the right and walk straight ahead downhill until you arrive a Great Tangley. Turn left along a small path between fields. At the end of this path at Little Tangley flick left and right to join another path.

Follow this to where it ends by a telephone box on Blackheath Lane. Cross over and walk straight ahead along Barnett Lane to where it joins the B2128. Turn right back to the Grantley.

Walks From Wonersh 3: Tangley - Chinthurst Hill - Wonersh Hollow

 A relatively short one, this.

Starting with your back to the main entrance to the Grantley Arms turn right and head towards Cranleigh. After about 100 metres bear left into Barnett Lane. Walk to the end of Barnett Lane, cross over Blackheath Lane and take the footpath next to a telephone kiosk.

At the end of the path go through a kissing gate and jink left and right onto another footpath. Follow this to Great Tangley where you turn left down the main track leading to the hamlet. When you reach the B2128 turn right and after about 100 metres cross over at the sign for Chinthurst Hill car park. Follow the track to cross straight over the car park onto a foot path leading to Chinthurst Hill.

Ignore the path cutting off to the right and walk straight ahead up a gentle slope. After a while this become steeper and you come to several wooden steps. Climb these, swing left then right up some more steps. At the t-junction at the top of the flight turn right. Pass a bench on your left, then turn left though a kissing gate and follow the path to the summit of the hill.

After inspecting the Jubilee toposcope and admiring the view walk to the left hand side of the folly tower and take the path straight down the hill. Pass through another kissing gate and join a tarmacked private road. Follow this downhill until it joins Chinthurst Lane where you turn left. Walk along the lane to the junction with the B2129 at Wonersh Hollow, bear left here and return through the village to your starting point.

Walks From Wonersh 2: Tangley - Chinthurst - Summersbury - Downs Link

 

Starting with you back to the main entrance to the Grantley Arms turn right and head towards Cranleigh. After about 100 metres bear left into Barnett Lane. Walk to the end of Barnett Lane, cross over Blackheath Lane and take the footpath next to a telephone kiosk.

At the end of the path go through a kissing gate and jink left and right onto another footpath. Follow this to Great Tangley where you turn left down the main track leading to the hamlet. When you reach the B2128 turn right and after about 100 metres cross over at the sign for Chinthurst Hill car park. Follow the track to cross straight over the car park onto a foot path leading to Chinthurst Hill.

After a few metres take the path off to the right and follow this to a t-junction with another path where you turn right over a stile. Keep straight ahead to another t-junction where you turn left.

When you reach a small road turn left and walk along it for about 200 metres until you reach Summersbury Drive. Turn right into the drive and follow it to the end where you bear left to find a snicket which takes you through to Somerswey. Continue to the end of Somerswey and turn left along the A281.

After crossing over the river and turn left again onto the Downs Link. Follow the track all the way to the site of the Bramley and Wonersh Station where you turn left along the B2129. Follow this road as it winds its way back to Wonersh.

Walks From Wonersh 1: Downs Link - Gosden - Tilthams Corner - Wey Navigation - Foxburrow Hill - Bramley

 All my Walks from Wonersh start with the assumption that the walker is standing with his/her back to the main door of the Grantley Arms.

Turn left along the street past the timbered-framed cottages on your left. Continue past Church Green on your left and then St John the Baptist church. At the junction with the road by the entrance to Unstead Manor turn left and then very shortly go right over 2 small bridges with metal railings on the side. Go over a third, brick, bridge and then immediately drop down left onto the tow path of the Wey Navigation.  

Soon after you pass the Manor Inn garden turn left to cross the Navigation by Trowers Footbridge. Follow the track ahead. After about 4 minutes, ignore the public bridleway to your left and continue slightly to your right up the hill and take the next left turn after Bunkers Hill Farm. Follow the path up through the trees. 

Partway up the hill there’s a 4-way junction with a padlocked black gate on your right with a kissing gate next to it and a footpath cutting back to the left. Take this cutback footpath carrying on through the woods. This path descends through the wood between two fences and then ascends again. Eventually you reach three steps down at a t-junction with another path. Here you turn right. Partway down the slope there is a clear view of Guildford in the Wey Valley with the Castle very obvious on the right hand side. There is also a splendid view of the Hog’s Back leading off to Farnham on the left. 

Eventually the path widens into the access track for Foxburrow Cottage. Follow this track down to the tarmac road. Cross straight over the road, go through the gate, and walk along the path on the right hand edge of Bramley Golf Course. Just beyond the 8^th tee the path jigs behind some trees and then does a little s-bend as it starts to descend down a hill. Ignore the turning to the right. Shortly you come to another fork. Take the left, main path. Follow this down the hill ignoring all left and right turnings on the way. At the bottom of the hill the path joins a private road. Follow this past a number of large residences including the Clock House. Eventually you reach the main road (A281). Here you turn right and left at the mini-roundabout by the BP garage. Soon you come to the level crossing gates from earlier in the walk. Retrace your route into Wonersh.
